Anchored VWAP in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
Anchored VWAP starts from a chosen bar. Close to its anchor it reacts strongly to each new bar; far from it, barely at all.
Short answer
Anchored VWAP (AVWAP) accumulates price × volume from a user-chosen anchor bar, such as a swing low or event. On the live bar its value changes with each trade, and the size of change depends on volume accumulated since the anchor. A freshly anchored AVWAP can move sharply within one bar; one anchored weeks ago is nearly fixed. Signals near a young AVWAP should wait for the close.
Which part of Anchored VWAP uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Anchor bar | Fixed | User-chosen |
| Volume since anchor | Yes | Grows; dilutes new bars |
| AVWAP | Yes | Sensitivity falls with age |
AVWAP's sensitivity depends on time since anchor, not time of day, so two AVWAPs on the same chart can behave very differently intrabar.
