At-the-Money Implied Volatility in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context
At-the-money implied volatility is the market's price for volatility around current spot. Read with price, it shows whether moves were expected.
Short answer
ATM IV is the implied volatility of options with strikes near spot, often interpolated for a fixed tenor (e.g. 30 days). Deribit reports mark_iv per option with the underlying price used. Rising ATM IV during a sell-off is common (demand for protection); rising IV in a rally can signal demand for upside. Compare ATM IV with realised volatility: IV well above realised means options price in more movement than recent history shows.
