Awesome Oscillator in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close

The Awesome Oscillator compares a 5-bar and 34-bar simple average of bar midpoints. Its live value moves with the current bar's high and low, not its close.

Short answer

AO = SMA(5) of median price − SMA(34) of median price, where median price = (high + low) ÷ 2. On the live bar, high and low can only expand, so the live bar's median price moves whenever a new extreme prints. Because the 5-bar average weights the live bar at one-fifth, AO responds noticeably; the common 'colour' (AO higher or lower than the previous bar) and zero-cross signals can flip mid-bar. Use closed-bar AO for saucer, zero-cross and twin-peaks rules.

Unlike close-based oscillators, AO only changes when a new high or low prints. It can sit still for long stretches inside a bar and then jump when an extreme is made.

Because AO uses midpoints, a long wick changes it as much as a full-bodied move would.
