Binance Spot OHLCV: Null vs Zero - Handle Missing Fields Correctly

Binance spot klines carry twelve fields, including trade count and taker-buy volume. Know which ones can legitimately be zero and how missing intervals appear.

Short answer

Binance's spot klines endpoint returns 12-element arrays: open time, open, high, low, close, volume, close time, quote asset volume, number of trades, taker buy base volume, taker buy quote volume and an ignore field; klines are identified by open time, and a timeZone parameter changes interval boundaries (startTime and endTime stay UTC). The documentation reviewed does not state whether intervals with no trades are returned or omitted, so check your data: if consecutive open times skip, treat skipped intervals as missing; if a kline has number of trades 0, treat it as a measured no-trade interval.

Illustrative: a dataset built with timeZone '8' and merged with one built in UTC produced daily candles that didn't line up. Recording the parameter with each file avoided the confusion on the next rebuild.

No; startTime and endTime are always UTC.

Sources and methodology

Field definitions come from DEX Screener's API reference, CoinGecko's onchain API documentation and Binance's Spot API documentation, read 17 October 2026. Where a schema was not visible in the documentation, this guide says so and describes defensive handling rather than asserting field behaviour.
