Chaikin Money Flow in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
Chaikin Money Flow weights volume by where the close sits inside the bar's range. On a live bar, both the close position and the range are still changing.
Short answer
CMF = sum over N bars of (money flow multiplier × volume) ÷ sum of volume, where the multiplier = ((close − low) − (high − close)) ÷ (high − low). For the live bar, close, high, low and volume are all provisional: the multiplier can swing from near −1 (close at the low) to near +1 (close at the high) inside one bar. Over a 20-bar window the live bar is one-twentieth of the denominator but can still move CMF across zero when volume is heavy. Use closed-bar CMF for signals.
Which part of Chaikin Money Flow uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Money flow multiplier | Yes | Ranges −1 to +1 intrabar |
| Bar high/low | Yes | Range widens |
| Bar volume | Yes | Grows |
| N-bar sums | Yes (live bar included) | CMF shifts |
A heavy-volume live bar dominates the N-bar sum more than its one-in-N share suggests, so CMF can cross zero intrabar on news spikes.
