ChartsPod Options Payoff Lab: Expiry Payout vs Pre-Expiry Scenarios
An options payoff diagram at expiry shows intrinsic value only. Before expiry, time value and volatility change the curve. Know which one you are looking at.
Short answer
An expiry payoff shows what a strategy is worth at expiration from intrinsic value alone: for a long call, max(0, price − strike) − premium. Before expiry, the position's value also includes time value, which depends on implied volatility and time remaining, so the curve is smoother and the break-even differs. In ChartsPod's options strategy tools, compare the expiry curve with pre-expiry scenarios at different volatilities and dates before choosing a strategy.
At expiry: intrinsic only
Illustrative long call: strike $60,000, premium $2,000. At expiry: price $58,000 → −$2,000; $62,000 → $0 (break-even); $66,000 → +$4,000.
Before expiry: time and volatility
| Scenario | Effect on long option value |
|---|---|
| IV rises | Increases |
| IV falls | Decreases |
| Time passes | Decreases (theta) |
| Price moves toward strike | Increases for long ATM gamma |
Control names in the terminal can change between releases. If a label differs from this guide, look for the setting that does the job described.
Comparing two strategies
Illustrative: a long call and a call spread with the same lower strike. At expiry, the spread caps profit but costs less, lowering the break-even. Before expiry, the spread's value is less sensitive to implied volatility because the short call offsets part of the long call's vega.
Comparing the two at expiry alone hides that difference. Run both through the same pre-expiry scenarios before choosing.
