Completed Auction Candidates in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading

A completed auction shows trading thinning out at the extreme, with one side doing little at the final price. Price response tests whether the extreme holds.

Short answer

A completed-auction candidate is an extreme where volume tapers and one side is near zero at the last price, suggesting the market found no more participants there. Price response tests it: if the extreme holds for a defined window, the reading helped; if price breaks through quickly, it didn't. Compare hold rates with unfinished extremes on the same data. A completed auction is about where trading stopped, not a guarantee of reversal.

Measuring the response

Fix the window (e.g. 20 bars) and what 'holds' means (no trade beyond the extreme). Compare the hold rate with that of unfinished extremes on the same market and timeframe.

Example

Illustrative: a low at 59,320 with 0.4 BTC on the ask and 6 BTC on the bid at the last tick; trading tapered over the last three rows. Price holds above for 30 bars. Across many cases, compare that hold rate with unfinished lows.
