Concentrated Pool Liquidity: How to Read the Number Before a Swap
In concentrated-liquidity pools, only liquidity near the current price is active. The pool's total value can be large while the depth at the price is thin.
Short answer
Uniswap's concentrated liquidity lets providers place liquidity within price ranges; only positions covering the current price provide depth. A pool reporting $2M in liquidity may have most of it far from the current price, so a modest swap can move price more than the headline suggests. Before a swap, check the depth near the current price (the quoted price impact at your size is the best summary), the fee tier, and whether liquidity sits in a narrow band that price could leave.
What the number means
| Reading | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Total liquidity | All positions, any range |
| Active liquidity | Positions covering current price |
| Narrow band | Depth drops if price exits |
| Quoted impact | Best summary of active depth |

Example
Illustrative: a pool shows $2M liquidity but only $180k sits within ±5% of price. A $30,000 swap quotes over 3% impact, much more than the headline suggests.
