Correlated Altcoin Exposure: When the Common Rule Produces a Misleading Result
'Spread risk across several altcoins' assumes they don't all move together. In sell-offs, correlations rise and five positions behave like one.
Short answer
The diversification benefit of N positions depends on their correlation: the effective number of independent bets is about N ÷ (1 + (N − 1) × ρ). Five alts with correlation 0.3 act like ≈ 2.3 independent positions; at 0.6, ≈ 1.5; at 0.9 — common in sharp sell-offs — ≈ 1.1. A portfolio sized as if it were diversified in calm markets is effectively one concentrated bet when it matters. Size for stress-period correlation.
Worked example
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Positions | 5 altcoins |
| ρ = 0.3 | ≈ 2.3 effective bets |
| ρ = 0.6 | ≈ 1.5 |
| ρ = 0.9 (sell-off) | ≈ 1.1 |

Does holding several altcoins diversify risk?
Less than it seems; correlations rise in sell-offs.
How many effective bets?
About N ÷ (1 + (N−1)ρ).
Which correlation for sizing?
Stress-period.
Sources and methodology
Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
