Crypto Heatmap Grey Zones: Missing Depth Is Not Zero Liquidity

Grey zones on a heatmap are not empty books. They are periods where depth was not captured, and reading them as zero liquidity invents market events.

Short answer

A grey or blank zone on a crypto heatmap usually means depth was not recorded for that interval: the viewer disconnected, the tab was throttled, the tool does not store history, or the feed dropped. It is missing data, not zero liquidity. Confirm by checking whether trades printed during the interval; if they did, the book existed. Exclude grey zones from any conclusion about liquidity and mark them as unknown in notes.

Causes of grey zones

CauseHow to confirm
Viewer disconnectedConnection indicator or reload behaviour
Background tab throttledGap aligns with when tab was hidden
Tool stores no historyGap before you opened the view
Feed outageGap across all users or markets
Missing vs emptyMissing vs empty. Left, Missing (grey): Depth not captured; Trades still print; Unknown liquidity; Exclude from conclusions. Right, Empty (thin): Captured, little depth; Trades may be sparse; Real thin book; Usable information.MISSING (GREY)Depth not capturedTrades still printUnknown liquidityExclude from conclusionsEMPTY (THIN)Captured, little depthTrades may be sparseReal thin bookUsable information

Example

Illustrative: a heatmap shows a grey band from 02:10 to 02:40 UTC. The footprint shows 1,800 BTC traded during that time at normal pace. The book clearly existed; the heatmap simply did not record it. Reading the band as 'liquidity vanished overnight' would be wrong.

Handling grey zonesHandling grey zones: Mark start and end in UTC; Check trades during the zone; Do not infer liquidity; Note cause if known; Prefer continuous recording for key periods.HANDLING GREY ZONESMark start and end in UTCCheck trades during the zoneDo not infer liquidityNote cause if knownPrefer continuous recording for key periods

Tool behaviour differs

Some heatmap tools record depth only while the view is open; others store history server-side at lower resolution; some backfill partially. The same market can show a grey zone in one tool and continuous (but coarser) depth in another. Before comparing heatmaps, find out how each stores history (see the TensorCharts vs ChartsPod coverage guide).

When a period matters to your analysis, such as an overnight move you plan to trade around, make sure at least one tool recorded it continuously.

Practice

Keep important heatmap views in the foreground and open them before the period you care about. See ChartsPod Heatmap History: Live Sessions and Missing Depth for measuring ChartsPod's heatmap history and TensorCharts vs ChartsPod: Compare Crypto Heatmap Coverage for coverage dimensions.

Questions readers ask

Does grey mean no orders?

No; it usually means depth wasn't recorded.

How do I check?

Look for trades during the zone.

Can I fill grey zones?

Only with stored history from the provider; otherwise leave them unknown.
