Crypto Market-Order Aggression: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
Market orders consume liquidity and move price. How much price moves per unit of aggression changes with conditions — and that change is informative.
Short answer
Market-order aggression (aggressive volume per time) moves price by an amount that depends on book depth. Measuring price change per unit of aggressive volume (an impact ratio) over time shows when liquidity is thin (high impact) or deep (low impact). Rising impact on the same aggression can precede volatile moves; low impact with heavy aggression suggests absorption. Compare impact by session and around events.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| High impact per BTC | Thin liquidity |
| Low impact, heavy aggression | Absorption |
| Impact rising | Liquidity withdrawing |
| Impact falling | Liquidity returning |
Measuring the response
Compute impact ratios per window from trades and price; compare across sessions and before/after events; relate to subsequent volatility.
Example
Illustrative: price moved 9 bps per 100 BTC of aggression in the hour before a release, versus 4 normally — thinner books.
