Crypto Open Interest in USD vs Coins: Avoid False Growth Signals

Open interest quoted in dollars grows when price grows. That growth says nothing about new positions.

Short answer

Open interest in USD equals open interest in coins (or contracts) times price. If price rises 10% with no new positions, USD open interest also rises 10%. Binance reports both sumOpenInterest (quantity) and sumOpenInterestValue (value). To judge whether traders are adding positions, use coin or contract OI; use USD OI only to compare total leverage across assets or venues at one moment, and label which you used.

TradingView's open-interest guide also distinguishes aggregated from single-venue OI and their units. Aggregates can mix coin-margined and USD-margined contracts; check what is summed.

Example

Illustrative: a headline says 'BTC open interest hits record $X billion'. In coins, OI is 8% below its high from two months earlier; the record is a price effect. Positioning is lighter than the headline implies.

Aggregated OI pitfalls

Aggregated open interest across venues can mix USD-margined contracts (quantity in coins) with coin-margined contracts (quantity in USD contracts). Summing them without conversion produces numbers that move with price in ways unrelated to positioning. Some aggregators convert everything to USD, which again mixes price into the series.

For positioning analysis, prefer per-venue OI in coins, then sum coin quantities across venues if you need a total. State the method in your notes.
