Cumulative Volume Delta in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
CVD adds each bar's buy-minus-sell volume to a running total. The live bar's delta can swing either way until it closes, and estimated CVDs add their own uncertainty.
Short answer
CVD = running sum of per-bar delta (aggressive buy − aggressive sell volume) from an anchor. The live bar's delta changes with every trade, so CVD's last point moves up and down until the close. If the tool estimates delta from intrabar candles (TradingView documents this method) rather than trades, the live value can also change as finer intrabar bars complete. Compare CVD extremes only between closed bars within one anchor period.
Which part of CVD uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Previous CVD | No | Fixed |
| Live bar delta | Yes | Swings with trades |
| Intrabar estimate | If used | Changes as sub-bars close |
A bar can be strongly positive for most of its life and close negative after one large sell sweep.
