Derivative Data Coverage Gaps in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context
Derivatives data is never complete: venues are missing, histories are short, feeds are sampled. Reading data with price means knowing what's not there.
Short answer
Common coverage gaps: aggregated OI or funding covering only some venues; OI history limited to about a month on Binance's statistics endpoint; liquidation streams sampled (Binance sends at most the latest per second); options data from one venue only. Before drawing conclusions, list the venues and windows included, check for missing periods, and avoid comparing metrics with different coverage.
Typical gaps
| Data | Gap |
|---|---|
| OI history | ≈ 1 month on Binance endpoint |
| Liquidations | Sampled public streams |
| Aggregates | Subset of venues |
| Options | Often single venue |
| Funding | Different intervals |
