DEX Pair Creation Times: How to Read the Number Before a Swap

A pair's creation time tells you how old the pool is. It doesn't tell you how old the token is, or when real trading began.

Short answer

DEX Screener's pairCreatedAt (nullable) and CoinGecko's pool_created_at give when the pool was created. A token can be older than its current pool (after a migration) or have several pools created at different times. Before a swap, compare the pool's creation time with the token's first pool, check activity since creation, and treat very recent creation as limited history.

Illustrative: the main pool was created three days ago, but the token traded for 140 days in another pool. The 'new token' label was wrong.

Sources and methodology

DEX Screener behaviour comes from its official documentation; pool and token concepts from CoinGecko, Uniswap, Raydium and Solana documentation, as read on 17 October 2026. Examples use illustrative numbers and do not refer to any real token. Nothing here is a recommendation to trade any token.

  1. DEX Screener: API reference — token and pair endpoints, nullable fields, rate limits.
  2. CoinGecko onchain API: Top pools by token address (pool schema) — pool fields and nullability (fdv_usd, market_cap_usd, reserve_in_usd).
