DEX Pool Reserve Data: Null vs Zero - Handle Missing Fields Correctly

Pool reserve values in USD depend on pricing both tokens. When one can't be priced, the USD reserve can be null even though the pool holds tokens.

Short answer

CoinGecko's onchain pool data includes reserve_in_usd, which can be null, while transaction counts and volume are always present (zero means no activity). DEX Screener's liquidity and liquidity.usd are also nullable. A null reserve means the USD value is unknown — often because a token in the pool has no reliable price — not that the pool is empty. Sorting pools by reserve with nulls as 0 hides them; flag them and check token amounts directly.

Illustrative: a pool with reserve_in_usd null holds 400 ETH against an unpriced token. Ranked last as '$0', it was actually the deepest pool for that pair.

Raw token reserves.

Sources and methodology

Field definitions come from DEX Screener's API reference, CoinGecko's onchain API documentation and Binance's Spot API documentation, read 17 October 2026. Where a schema was not visible in the documentation, this guide says so and describes defensive handling rather than asserting field behaviour.

  1. CoinGecko onchain API: Top pools by token address (pool schema) — pool fields and nullability (fdv_usd, market_cap_usd, reserve_in_usd).
  2. DEX Screener: API reference — token and pair endpoints, nullable fields, rate limits.
