DEX Screener Token-Pool Data: Null vs Zero - Handle Missing Fields Correctly
The token-pairs endpoint returns every pool for a token. Some pools come back with partial data; how you treat the gaps changes which pool looks like the main market.
Short answer
DEX Screener's token-pairs endpoint returns a list of pair objects for a chain and token address. In the published Pair schema, txns and volume are always present (zero means no activity in that window), while priceUsd, liquidity (and liquidity.usd), fdv, marketCap and pairCreatedAt can be null (unknown). An empty list means no pools were found for that address on that chain. When choosing the main pool, rank only pools with known liquidity and flag the rest for checking rather than placing them last.
Fields and what missing values mean
| Field | Null / absent means | Zero / empty means |
|---|---|---|
| liquidity.usd | Liquidity unknown (e.g. no USD pricing) | — |
| priceUsd | No USD price available | — |
| txns.h24.buys | — | No buys in 24h |
| volume.h24 | — | No volume in 24h |
| Response list | — | Empty: no pools for address |

Illustrative: of 6 pools returned, one has liquidity.usd null but 900 transactions in 24h. Ranking it last as '$0 liquidity' would hide what may be an active pool quoted in a token without USD pricing.

What does null liquidity mean on a pool?
Unknown, often because USD pricing is unavailable.
What does an empty token-pairs response mean?
No pools found for that address on that chain.
Are txns ever null?
Not in the published Pair schema.
Sources and methodology
Field definitions come from DEX Screener's API reference, CoinGecko's onchain API documentation and Binance's Spot API documentation, read 17 October 2026. Where a schema was not visible in the documentation, this guide says so and describes defensive handling rather than asserting field behaviour.
