DEX Transaction Counts: How to Read the Number Before a Swap
Transaction counts tell you how many swaps happened, not how much value moved or how many people traded.
Short answer
DEX transaction counts (buys and sells per window, exposed by both DEX Screener and CoinGecko's onchain API) count swaps. Before a swap, read them with volume (value), unique makers or buyers/sellers (participants) and the time window. High counts with low volume suggest small or bot trades; high counts with few makers suggest repetition. Compare short and long windows to see whether activity is rising or fading.
What the number means
| Reading | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Many txns, high volume | Active market |
| Many txns, low volume | Small or bot trades |
| Many txns, few makers | Repetitive trading |
| Short window ≫ long-window average | Activity spike |

Example
Illustrative: 620 transactions in the last hour versus a 180/hour daily average, but volume only 1.3× average and makers up just 10%. Most of the spike is many small trades from existing wallets.

Sources and methodology
DEX Screener behaviour comes from its official documentation; pool and token concepts from CoinGecko, Uniswap, Raydium and Solana documentation, as read on 17 October 2026. Examples use illustrative numbers and do not refer to any real token. Nothing here is a recommendation to trade any token.
- DEX Screener: API reference — token and pair endpoints, nullable fields, rate limits.
- CoinGecko onchain API: Top pools by token address (pool schema) — pool fields and nullability (fdv_usd, market_cap_usd, reserve_in_usd).
