DMI in Crypto: Warm-Up Bars and Short-History Errors
+DI and −DI use Wilder smoothing of directional movement. They exist sooner than ADX, but still carry start-point effects.
Short answer
DMI(14) needs about 15 bars for the first +DI and −DI values. Their smoothing is recursive, so early values depend on the first bars of the series; crosses of +DI and −DI on short histories can differ from long-history calculations. ADX, built on DMI, needs more. For DMI-based filters, drop early bars and check crosses on a longer series.
How much history DMI needs
| Component | Bars needed | Type |
|---|---|---|
| ±DM per bar | 2 | Per bar |
| True range | 2 | Per bar |
| Smoothed ±DM, TR (14) | ≈ 15 | Recursive |
| +DI, −DI | ≈ 15 | Derived |
Recursive smoothing: values depend on where the series starts and settle only gradually.
