Ease of Movement in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close

Ease of Movement relates price movement to volume: big moves on light volume score high. On the live bar, low early volume can make the value extreme.

Short answer

EMV = (midpoint change) ÷ (volume ÷ scale ÷ (high − low)), where midpoint change = (H+L)/2 − prior (H+L)/2; usually smoothed (e.g. 14-period SMA). Early in the live bar, volume is small, so the 'box ratio' is small and EMV can be very large; as volume accumulates, EMV shrinks toward its closing value. Read EMV on closed bars.

Because volume is in the denominator, the live bar's EMV is biased toward extremes early in the bar.
