Event-Risk Position Reductions: A Worked Crypto Example With Fees Included
Cutting size before a scheduled event costs fees and slippage. Whether that's worth it depends on how far price could gap past your stop.
Short answer
An event-risk reduction trims a position before a scheduled event (a macro release, an exchange upgrade) to limit gap risk. Example: 2 BTC long at $60,000; halving to 1 BTC before the event and re-entering after costs ≈ $30 to exit, ≈ $30 to re-enter and ≈ $10 of slippage — about $70. If the event gaps price 3% through the stop, the loss is about $3,600 on 2 BTC versus $1,800 on 1 BTC. The reduction costs little relative to the gap it insures against; the cost is missing part of a favourable move.
Worked example
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Position | 2 BTC at $60,000 |
| Reduce to | 1 BTC |
| Exit fee (1 BTC) | ≈ $30 |
| Re-entry fee | ≈ $30 |
| Slippage | ≈ $10 |
| Cost of reduction | ≈ $70 |
| 3% gap: full size | ≈ −$3,600 |
| 3% gap: half size | ≈ −$1,800 |

Sources and methodology
Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
