Extreme Funding Rates: How to Read the Data With Price Context

Extreme funding is expensive for one side. How long they can afford it, and where price is, decides what happens next.

Short answer

Extreme funding (far above or below normal for that market) means one side is paying heavily to hold positions. Convert it to a daily or annualised cost to see how much pressure it creates: at +0.1% per 8h, longs pay about 0.3% per day. Read it with price context: extreme positive funding at a breakout high can unwind sharply; extreme negative funding at a capitulation low can fuel a squeeze. Some venues cap funding (Hyperliquid documents a 4% per hour cap), so extremes are bounded.
