Falling Price With Falling Open Interest in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context
Price and open interest falling together means positions are closing as price drops. It often marks forced selling, and sometimes the end of it.
Short answer
Falling price with falling open interest means longs are closing, voluntarily or through liquidations, as price drops. In context: a sharp drop with heavy long liquidations and a large OI decline often clears leverage and can precede stabilisation; a slow bleed with steady OI decline suggests longs giving up gradually without capitulation. Compare the size of the OI drop with recent OI build-up, check recorded liquidations and see whether funding resets toward zero.

Try it in ChartsPodMeasuring how much was cleared
Compare the OI drop with how much OI built up before. Illustrative: OI rose 15% over two weeks of rally; a one-day flush removed 12%. Most of the new leverage is gone. If the flush removed only 3%, much leverage remains.
