Falling Price With Falling Open Interest in Crypto: Units and Time Windows That Change the Result

Price and open interest falling together usually means longs closing or being liquidated. In USD the OI drop is exaggerated by the price fall.

Short answer

When price falls and coin OI falls, positions are closing into the decline — long liquidations or voluntary exits. In USD, a 5% price drop with a 5% coin-OI drop shows a 9.75% USD OI drop, nearly double the positioning change. Use coin OI to size the unwind, check long liquidations and whether OI stabilises as price does (unwind finished) or keeps falling (ongoing).
