Fixed-Percent Account Risk in Crypto: When the Common Rule Produces a Misleading Result
Risking a fixed percent per trade scales size with the account. It protects capital in drawdowns, but makes recovery slower than the losses suggest.
Short answer
Fixed-percent risk (e.g. 2% of current equity per trade) shrinks positions after losses. That limits drawdown but also slows recovery: ten straight 2% losses leave ≈ 81.7% of equity, and getting back requires ≈ +22.4%, not +20%. The rule also misleads when several open positions each risk 2% of the same equity — total risk is the sum. Count open risk across positions and include fees in each loss.
Worked example
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Risk per trade | 2% of equity |
| After 10 losses | ≈ 81.7% of start |
| Gain needed to recover | ≈ +22.4% |
| 5 open positions × 2% | 10% at risk |
| Each loss plus fees | Slightly more than 2% |
Where it misleads
| Situation | Hidden effect |
|---|---|
| Several open trades | Risk adds up |
| Correlated positions | Effectively one bet |
| Recovery | Needs more than the loss |
| Fees | Push each loss above 2% |

Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
