Footprint Bar-Delta Divergence in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
A bar that closes up with negative delta (or down with positive delta) shows aggression and price disagreeing. What price does next tells you which side was right.
Short answer
A footprint bar-delta divergence is a closed bar whose direction disagrees with its delta. An up-close with negative delta can mean passive buyers absorbed selling and lifted price anyway; a down-close with positive delta, the reverse. Price response tests it: continuation in the bar's direction supports the passive side; reversal supports the aggressors. Use closed bars, trade-based delta, and compare with non-divergent bars.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Continues in bar direction | Passive side won |
| Reverses | Aggressors won later |
| No follow-through | Noise |
| Repeats at a level | Persistent passive interest |
Measuring the response
Classify closed bars by close direction and delta sign; measure returns over fixed windows for each class.
Example
Illustrative: up-close bars with negative delta were followed by stronger continuation than ordinary up bars on one market — consistent with absorption by passive buyers.
