Footprint POC Migration in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
When candle POCs move steadily in one direction, acceptance is following price. When price moves but POCs don't, it often isn't.
Short answer
POC migration is the movement of each candle's highest-volume price over successive candles. If price rises and POCs step up with it, the market is accepting higher prices; if price rises but POCs stay low (volume remains at the old level and the move happens on thin volume), the move lacks acceptance and is prone to retrace. Compare the direction and pace of POC migration with price over the same candles, and treat lagging POCs as a warning rather than a signal.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| POCs follow price | Accepted move |
| POCs lag price | Move on thin volume |
| POCs move opposite | Distribution/absorption |
| POCs flat, price flat | Balance |
Measuring the response
Track the POC of each closed candle and compute its change over the same window as price. A ratio of POC change to price change near 1 indicates acceptance; well below 1 indicates lagging acceptance.
Example
Illustrative: over six 15-minute candles, price rises $420 but candle POCs rise only $90, with most volume still traded near the start. Price retraces $300 in the next hour back toward where volume sat.
