Funding Income vs Trading PnL: How to Read the Data With Price Context

Earning funding on a short perp looks like steady income. Price moves on the same position can outweigh it many times over.

Short answer

A short perpetual earns funding when funding is positive. Example: short 2 BTC at $60,000 with funding of 0.02% per 8 hours earns about $720 over 30 settlements (10 days). If price rises to $63,000 in that time, the trading loss is $6,000. Funding income only compares fairly with P&L on a hedged position (e.g. long spot, short perp).
