Gamma Exposure in Crypto: Model Assumptions Before Market Conclusions
Gamma exposure charts look precise. Under the surface they rest on an assumption about who owns which options.
Short answer
Gamma exposure (GEX) estimates how much dealers must buy or sell the underlying as price moves, computed as open interest × gamma per strike, signed by an assumption about whether dealers are long or short each option. The common assumption (dealers short calls, long puts, or similar conventions) is often wrong for crypto, where positioning is mixed. Before drawing conclusions such as 'positive gamma will pin price', state the assumption, the venue, the expiries included and the timestamp. ChartsPod's options tools include exposure and zero-gamma views; read them with these caveats.
How GEX is built
Assumptions that matter
| Assumption | If wrong |
|---|---|
| Dealers short calls / long puts | Sign of exposure reverses |
| All OI held by customers | Ignores dealer-to-dealer and hedged spreads |
| Single venue covers the market | Misses OTC and other venues |
| IV model | Gamma values shift |

Testing a gamma claim
If a GEX chart says positive gamma above price should dampen moves, test it: over many days, compare realised intraday ranges when price sat in the 'positive' zone versus the 'negative' zone under the same assumption. If there is no difference on your market, the assumption or the data does not fit well enough to rely on.
Record the snapshot time with each test, since exposure changes as OI and price move.
Conclusion
Treat gamma exposure as model output whose sign depends on positioning assumptions; state them and test against price behaviour.

What is gamma exposure?
An estimate of dealer hedging needs from OI and gamma, signed by positioning assumptions.

It is where estimated exposure changes sign; not a guaranteed level.
Why do GEX charts differ between providers?
Different assumptions, venues, expiries and IV models.
