Heikin-Ashi Trend Signal Backtest in Crypto: Fees, Slippage and Break-Even Costs
Heikin-Ashi candles average prices to smooth trends. Their open and close aren't real prices, which is the main backtest trap.
Short answer
Heikin-Ashi close = average of open, high, low, close; HA open = average of the previous HA open and close. A rule like 'buy after two green HA candles' is fine as a signal, but filling at HA prices assumes trades at levels that didn't exist. Simulate fills at the real next-bar open with costs. HA signals also lag, which affects break-even cost through later entries and exits.
Break-even cost
| Item | Value (illustrative) |
|---|---|
| Trades | 90 |
| Gross avg per trade | +0.70% |
| Fees (2 × 0.05%) | −0.10% |
| Slippage (2 × 0.04%) | −0.08% |
| Net avg per trade | +0.52% |
| Break-even round-trip cost | 0.70% |
HA vs real fills
| Fill price | Net avg (illustrative) |
|---|---|
| HA close | +1.15% (invalid) |
| Real next open | +0.48% |
| Real close of signal bar | +0.52% (borderline look-ahead) |
