Long-Squeeze Candidates in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context
A long squeeze is the mirror: crowded longs forced to sell into a falling market. Data shows crowding; price shows whether the unwind begins.
Short answer
A long-squeeze candidate shows crowded longs: high positive funding, rising OI as price stalls, high long-side account ratios. It becomes a squeeze when price drops and OI falls with long liquidations, as longs sell to exit. Positive funding can stay high through a strong uptrend, so treat it as a condition, not a signal. The trigger is price breaking down with OI falling; price falling with OI rising means new shorts, not forced longs.
Setup vs trigger
| Stage | Data |
|---|---|
| Crowding | High positive funding, OI rising, price stalling |
| Trigger | Breakdown |
| Squeeze | Price down, OI down, long liquidations |
| Exhaustion | Funding falls, OI stabilises |
Price context
Compare spot and perp: if spot is weak while perps carry high funding, perp longs are financing a move spot isn't confirming.
