Maintenance-Margin Tiers in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context
Larger positions need a higher maintenance margin. Tiered brackets mean your liquidation price depends on position size, not just leverage.
Short answer
Exchanges set maintenance margin in notional brackets: bigger positions use a higher maintenance-margin ratio. Binance publishes brackets with notionalFloor, notionalCap, maintMarginRatio and a cum value, so maintenance margin = notional × ratio − cum. With illustrative tiers (0.4% up to $50k, 0.5% to $250k with cum 50, 1% to $1M with cum 1,300), a $400,000 position needs $2,700. Read liquidation data knowing that large positions sit in higher tiers and liquidate sooner for the same leverage.
Illustrative bracket table
| Notional | MMR | cum | MM at top of bracket |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 – 50k | 0.4% | 0 | $200 |
| 50k – 250k | 0.5% | 50 | $1,200 |
| 250k – 1M | 1.0% | 1,300 | $8,700 |
The cum value keeps maintenance margin continuous at bracket edges: at $250k, 0.5% × 250k − 50 = 1.0% × 250k − 1,300 = $1,200.
