Negative Delta During a Rally in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
Sellers are hitting bids, yet price keeps rising. Who is on the other side, and how long can they keep absorbing?
Short answer
Negative delta during a rally means more volume traded on the bid than on the ask: aggressive sellers were active while price still rose. The rally is then being carried by passive buyers lifting their bids and absorbing the selling. Price response tells you how strong that absorption is: if price keeps rising per unit of selling, the buyers are in control; if each wave of selling starts to push price down, absorption is fading. Check who the sellers are (spot profit-taking, perp shorts opening, liquidations) through OI and spot vs perp data.
Who sells into a rally
| Seller | Clue | Implication |
|---|---|---|
| Spot holders taking profit | Spot delta negative, perp neutral | Supply from holders; can cap the move |
| New perp shorts | OI rising, funding falling | Fuel for a squeeze if price keeps rising |
| Longs closing | OI falling | Rally losing support |
| Arbitrage/hedging | Offsetting trades elsewhere | Neutral for direction |
Watching absorption fade
Track price change per 100 BTC of net selling over consecutive windows. Illustrative: +0.4%, then +0.2%, then −0.1%. The first windows show buyers comfortably absorbing; the last shows selling finally moving price. A structure break after that sequence is stronger evidence than the delta sign alone.
When negative delta fuels a squeeze
If the sellers are new perp shorts (OI rising, funding dropping toward or below zero) and price still climbs, those shorts are underwater. Continued strength can force them to buy back, accelerating the rally. Negative delta in that context is a warning for shorts, not a bearish signal. When selling starts moving price down and structure breaks.
