Partial Profit-Taking in Crypto: When the Common Rule Produces a Misleading Result

'Take partial profits to raise your win rate' is true — and misleading. Win rate can jump while expectancy barely moves.

Short answer

Taking half off at 1R raises the share of trades that finish positive, but expectancy is what pays. Illustrative 100 trades with a 2R target: all-in/all-out wins 40% (+2R) and loses 60% (−1R), expectancy +0.20R. With half off at 1R and the rest stopped at entry if reversed: 40% finish +1.5R, 15% finish +0.5R and 45% lose −1R — win rate 55%, expectancy +0.225R. The win rate rose 15 points; expectancy rose about 0.025R before the extra fill's costs. Judge partials by expectancy and drawdown.

Why it misleads

Win rate counts outcomes, not their size. Partials convert some losers into small winners and some big winners into medium ones; the net effect on expectancy can be small or negative depending on how often trades reach the final target.

Sources and methodology

Arithmetic uses standard sizing formulas. Fee rates (0.05% taker, 0.02% maker), slippage and funding values are illustrative; check your venue's schedule. Liquidation figures are simplified approximations; exchanges calculate them with their own maintenance-margin rules (see Bybit's documentation).
