Passive Liquidity at VWAP in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
Resting orders often cluster near VWAP, where many participants benchmark execution. Price response at VWAP shows whether that liquidity defends it.
Short answer
VWAP is a common execution benchmark, so passive orders may cluster near it. When price returns to VWAP, check the book: resting size near VWAP, whether it's refilled after trades (replenishment), and delta at the touch. Price response then tests it: holding and moving away suggests passive participants defended; slicing through suggests no meaningful defence. Fix the VWAP anchor (e.g. 00:00 UTC).
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Holds and moves away | Passive defence |
| Slices through | No defence |
| Ranges around VWAP | Balanced |
| Refills after trades | Replenishment |
Measuring the response
At each VWAP touch, record resting size within a band, refills, delta and the price change over N bars. Compare with touches of random levels at similar distance.
Example
Illustrative: at the third VWAP touch of the session, 140 BTC of bids sat within ±0.05% and refilled twice; price held and rose 0.5%. Count the touches where it didn't hold too.
