Percentage Price Oscillator in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
PPO is MACD expressed as a percentage of the slow EMA. It moves intrabar like MACD, but is comparable across coins with different prices.
Short answer
PPO = (EMA(12) − EMA(26)) ÷ EMA(26) × 100, with a signal line (EMA of PPO) and histogram. On the live bar, both EMAs move with price, so PPO, its signal and histogram change before the close; the histogram moves most. Because it's a percentage, PPO compares momentum across assets with different prices, which MACD can't. Use closed-bar crosses.
Which part of PPO uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| EMA(12), EMA(26) | Yes | Move with price |
| PPO | Yes | Percentage |
| Signal EMA(9) | Yes | Smoother |
| Histogram | Yes | Moves most |
Same intrabar behaviour as MACD, but in percent, so a 0.2% PPO move means the same on a $1 coin and a $60,000 coin.
