Positive Funding With Falling Price: Read the Positioning Conflict
Funding says longs are paying shorts, yet price is falling. That conflict tells you something about who is trapped.
Short answer
Positive funding means the perpetual trades at a premium and longs pay shorts. If price falls while funding stays positive, longs are holding (or adding) despite losses and paying to do so; the premium has not yet unwound. That positioning can fuel further declines if those longs are forced out, or it can reflect patient spot-hedged positions that are not at risk. Check OI (are longs adding?), the basis, and liquidation levels before concluding.
What the conflict means
Funding is calculated from the premium between the perpetual and its index. Positive funding during a decline means the perp is still priced above spot, so demand for long exposure persists. Hyperliquid's documentation, for example, describes funding computed from an average premium plus an interest component; Binance exposes the premium index and funding history through its API.
Checks
Example
Illustrative: price −6% over a day; funding stays +0.03% per 8h; OI in coins +3%. Longs are adding into the decline and paying a premium to do it. Long liquidation estimates sit 4% lower. When price reaches that area, recorded liquidations spike and funding falls to zero within hours.
Mistakes reading this conflict
Reading funding from one venue as the whole market: funding can be positive on one exchange and neutral on another, so check the venues where most open interest sits. Ignoring the funding interval: a modest-looking hourly rate can be costly when converted to a daily figure. Assuming trapped longs will always be liquidated: if the longs are hedged with spot elsewhere, they may be comfortable paying funding while price falls.
A practical habit is to write the funding rate, the OI change in coins and the nearest liquidation estimate side by side whenever the conflict appears, then record how it resolved.

Why is funding positive when price is falling?
The perp still trades at a premium; demand for longs persists.
Is that bearish?
It can be, if longs are leveraged and trapped; check OI and liquidations.
What resolves the conflict?
Price recovery or longs closing, often through liquidations.
