Price-and-OI Divergence Backtest in Crypto: Fees, Slippage and Break-Even Costs
A price-OI divergence rule trades when price makes a new high but OI falls (or the reverse). OI data timing and units decide whether the backtest is honest.
Short answer
A price-OI divergence rule might short when price makes a new N-bar high while coin OI over the same window falls (rally on closing positions), expecting weakness. Use coin-denominated OI aligned to bar times, only OI values available at signal time, and archived history (Binance's statistics endpoint covers about a month). Compute break-even cost and compare with random entries at new highs.
Break-even cost
| Item | Value (illustrative) |
|---|---|
| Trades | 90 |
| Gross avg per trade | +0.61% |
| Fees (2 × 0.05%) | −0.10% |
| Slippage (2 × 0.04%) | −0.08% |
| Net avg per trade | +0.43% |
| Break-even round-trip cost | 0.61% |
Benchmark
| Entry | Trades | Net avg (illustrative) |

| Any new high (short) | 240 | −0.09% |
| New high + coin OI falling | 90 | +0.32% |
| New high + USD OI falling | 40 | +0.18% |
