Range Breakout Retest Backtest in Crypto: Fees, Slippage and Break-Even Costs
Waiting for a breakout to retest the broken level filters some false breakouts. It also misses breakouts that never come back.
Short answer
A breakout-retest rule waits for price to close beyond a range edge, then enters when price returns to the edge and holds (e.g. a closed bar that doesn't close back inside). It typically has fewer trades and better fills than buying the breakout bar, but skips strong moves that never retest. Define the retest window and 'hold' precisely, use next-bar fills, compute break-even cost and count missed breakouts.
Break-even cost
| Item | Value (illustrative) |
|---|---|
| Trades | 90 |
| Gross avg per trade | +0.58% |
| Fees (2 × 0.05%) | −0.10% |
| Slippage (2 × 0.03%) | −0.06% |
| Net avg per trade | +0.42% |
| Break-even round-trip cost | 0.58% |
Breakout vs retest entry

| Retest within 10 bars | 90 | +0.50% | 41% |
