ROC in Crypto: Warm-Up Bars and Short-History Errors

Rate of change compares today's close with the close N bars ago. It needs only N+1 bars — but on new listings that past close may be a launch price.

Short answer

ROC(N) = (close ÷ close N bars ago − 1) × 100, so it needs N+1 bars and isn't recursive. Its short-history risk is the reference close: on a token N bars into its life, the comparison is against a launch-period price that may have been set in thin liquidity, producing extreme ROC values. Use ROC only once the reference bars come from normal trading, and compare coins on equal footing.
