ROC in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
Rate of Change compares today's price with the price N bars ago. Only one side of that comparison is live, so ROC moves exactly with price during the bar.
Short answer
ROC = (close − close N bars ago) ÷ close N bars ago × 100. The past close is fixed; the current close is the live price until the bar ends. ROC therefore moves one-for-one (in percentage terms) with price inside the bar. Zero-line crosses can vanish if price returns to near the reference close. Use closed values, and remember ROC also changes on the next bar when the reference close rolls forward, which can create crosses without any new price movement.
Which part of ROC uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Close N bars ago | No | Fixed during bar |
| Current close (live) | Yes | Direct |
| ROC | Yes | Moves 1:1 with % price change |
| Reference roll-forward | Next bar | Can change ROC without price change |
The roll-forward effect is easy to miss: when the bar N periods back was unusually high or low, ROC can jump at the next bar's open even if price is flat.
