Rolling Beta in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close

Rolling beta estimates how much an asset moves per 1% move in BTC. Its live value depends on two unfinished returns and on BTC's variance.

Short answer

Rolling beta = covariance(asset, BTC) ÷ variance(BTC) over N return pairs. On the live bar, a large BTC move raises BTC's variance; if the asset hasn't moved yet, covariance lags, so beta dips; once the asset catches up, beta rises. These swings are noise within the bar. Use closed bars, align timestamps, and note that beta itself varies with the window length.

Beta's denominator is BTC variance, so quiet BTC periods make beta estimates unstable.
