Spot CVD vs Perpetual CVD: Interpret Disagreement Before a Breakout
When spot buyers and perpetual buyers disagree before a breakout, they tell you who is pushing. That difference often decides whether the breakout holds.
Short answer
Compare spot CVD and perpetual CVD on the same venue, window and reset before a breakout. Rising spot CVD with flat perp CVD suggests cash buying, often more durable; rising perp CVD with flat or falling spot CVD suggests leveraged buying, which can unwind quickly, especially if open interest and funding are rising. Disagreement is information about who is driving price, not a signal by itself. Check the book and positioning before acting.
Four patterns
| Spot CVD | Perp CVD | Likely driver | Watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rising | Rising | Broad buying | Follow-through |
| Rising | Flat/falling | Cash buyers; perps hedging or shorting | Funding turning negative |
| Flat/falling | Rising | Leveraged buyers | OI and funding rising |
| Falling | Falling | Broad selling | Breakout likely to fail |
Making the comparison valid
Perp volume is usually larger, so raw CVD values are not comparable; compare direction and slope, or normalise (see How to Normalize CVD Before Comparing Two Crypto Exchanges).
Worked example
Illustrative: BTC approaches a range high. Over 4 hours, spot CVD rises steadily while perp CVD is flat and funding drifts from +0.01% to 0.00%. Price breaks out and holds; perps later chase. In a second case, perp CVD surges, OI rises 6% and funding jumps, while spot CVD is flat. The breakout fails within an hour and long liquidations follow.

Open CVD in ChartsPodMistakes when comparing spot and perp flow
Comparing raw CVD values: perpetual volume is usually several times spot volume, so perp CVD will dominate in absolute terms even when spot buyers are more one-sided. Mixing venues: spot CVD from one exchange and perp CVD from another adds venue differences on top of market-type differences. Ignoring funding: perp-led buying with funding already elevated carries more squeeze risk than the same buying with neutral funding.
A good habit is to write one line before a breakout: 'spot-led', 'perp-led' or 'both', with the funding and OI change in the same window. After enough breakouts, your own notes show which pattern held more often on the markets you trade.
Using it
Combine with funding and OI (see Price Rising While Open Interest Falls: Short Covering or Deleveraging?, Rising Price With Rising Open Interest in Crypto: How to Read the Data With Price Context) and with spot-vs-perp basics (How to Compare Spot and Perpetual Charts in ChartsPod).
Use spot vs perp CVD disagreement to identify who is driving a breakout, and weigh leverage-led moves with more caution.

Launch ChartsPodQuestions readers ask
Why compare spot and perp CVD?
To see whether cash buyers or leveraged traders are driving price.
Can I compare raw CVD values?
Not directly; perp volume is usually larger. Compare direction or normalise.
Is spot-led always better?
It tends to be more durable but is not a guarantee.
