Stochastic Oscillator in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
The stochastic %K places the close within the recent high-low range. On the live bar, both the close and the range can change, so %K can sweep across its scale.
Short answer
%K = (close − lowest low over N) ÷ (highest high over N − lowest low over N) × 100, with %D a moving average of %K. The live bar's close moves, and a new high or low widens the range. In narrow ranges, a small price move swings %K from 20 to 80. Crosses of %K and %D, and of 20/80, are common intrabar and may vanish. Use closed bars; the smoothed slow stochastic damps but doesn't remove this.
Which part of Stochastic uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Close | Yes | Moves |
| Highest high / lowest low | Yes, if extremes extend | Range widens |
| %K | Yes | Swings in narrow ranges |
| %D | Yes | Smoother |
When the live bar sets a new high, %K is pinned near 100 while price is at the high, then falls as soon as price pulls back.
