Supertrend in Crypto: Why the Value Changes Before Candle Close
Supertrend flips between an upper and lower ATR band when price closes across it. Intrabar, the line can look flipped while the bar is still open.
Short answer
Supertrend uses bands at (high + low) ÷ 2 ± multiplier × ATR, with a ratchet: in an uptrend the lower band can only rise, in a downtrend the upper band can only fall. It flips when price closes beyond the active band. On the live bar, price crossing the band makes the indicator display a flip that disappears if price returns before the close; the live bar's high, low and ATR also move the band. Act on closed-bar flips.
Which part of Supertrend uses the live bar
| Component | Uses current bar? | Effect intrabar |
|---|---|---|
| Midpoint (H+L)/2 | Yes | Moves with extremes |
| ATR | Yes | Drifts up |
| Active band | Yes | Ratchets |
| Flip | Yes, until close | Can reverse |
Because the band uses the live bar's high and low, a big wick can move the band itself while price is crossing it.
