Taker Buy-Sell Classification in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading

Delta depends on classifying each trade as buyer- or seller-initiated. Exchange flags are exact; inferred methods can misclassify, changing what price response seems to show.

Short answer

Trade feeds from exchanges usually flag the aggressor side (for example Binance's 'buyer is maker' flag). Tools without that flag infer it, using tick rules or candle direction, which misclassifies some trades. Before testing price response to delta, know the method: exact flags give reliable delta; inferred methods add noise that weakens apparent relationships. Compare both on the same window if you can.

Measuring the response

Use exchange flags where available. If testing an inferred method, compute delta both ways on the same trades and compare the price-response statistics.

Example

Illustrative: a delta divergence visible with candle-based classification disappears with exchange flags. The 'signal' came from misclassification.
