Thin Order-Book Levels in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading

Thin order-book levels — prices with little resting size — let price travel quickly. Response shows whether thinness mattered or was refilled.

Short answer

A thin-level candidate is a price zone where resting liquidity is much lower than nearby. When price enters it, it may move through quickly (thinness mattered) or the zone may fill with new orders (thinness was temporary). Measure the speed of travel through the zone and whether depth refilled. Thin zones are useful for expecting fast moves, not their direction.

Measuring the response

Record depth per price band before entry into the zone, the time to traverse it, and depth on exit. Compare traverse times with similar-size moves through normal depth.

Example

Illustrative: price crosses the 59,850–59,800 pocket in 4 seconds versus about 40 seconds through the thicker bands around it.
