Token Supply Changes: How to Read the Number Before a Swap
A token's supply can grow through minting or unlocks and shrink through burns. Changes alter valuation and selling pressure.
Short answer
Before a swap, check whether supply can change and whether it recently did. On Solana, a set mint authority allows new tokens to be minted; on EVM chains, owner-controlled mint functions do the same. Scheduled unlocks add circulating supply; burns reduce it. Compare current supply on the explorer with figures shown on DEX tools, look for recent mint or burn transactions, and read any unlock schedule. Unexpected supply increases dilute holders immediately.
What the number means
| Reading | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Mint authority set / owner mint | Supply can increase |
| Recent mint transaction | Supply did increase |
| Unlock scheduled | Circulating supply will increase |
| Burn transactions | Supply decreased |

Example
Illustrative: a DEX page shows FDV based on 1.0B supply, but the explorer shows 1.2B after a mint two days earlier. The page's FDV is 17% too low until it refreshes; holders were diluted by the same amount.

Can a token's supply change?
Yes, through minting, unlocks and burns.
How do I check minting ability?
Mint authority on Solana; owner functions on EVM.
Why compare explorer and DEX supply?
DEX tools may lag supply changes.
Sources and methodology
DEX Screener behaviour comes from its official documentation; pool and token concepts from CoinGecko, Uniswap, Raydium and Solana documentation, as read on 17 October 2026. Examples use illustrative numbers and do not refer to any real token. Nothing here is a recommendation to trade any token.
- Solana: Assets on Solana (tokens) — mint accounts, supply, decimals, mint and freeze authority.
- DEX Screener: Token listing — listing after first liquidity and trade; supply inputs.
