Trade-Bubble Size Scaling in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
Trade bubbles scale with trade size, but the scale (linear, square-root, log) changes which trades look big. Price response shows which bubbles mattered.
Short answer
Trade-bubble charts draw circles sized by trade volume. With linear scaling, a few huge trades dominate; with square-root or log scaling, medium trades become visible too. The visual impression of 'whale activity' depends on that choice. For price-response analysis, ignore the visual and bucket trades by actual size, then measure what followed each bucket.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Linear scale | Few huge bubbles |
| Square-root / log | More visible mid-size |
| Impression | Depends on scale |
| Analysis | By actual size |
Measuring the response
Bucket trades by size relative to the median, measure price response per bucket, and compare with random times.
Example
Illustrative: on a log-scaled chart a cluster of mid-size buys looked significant; bucketed by size, those trades showed no different response from random times.
