Trade-Sweep Clusters in Crypto: What Price Response Adds to the Reading
A sweep takes out several price levels in one aggressive move. Clusters of sweeps can start a move or exhaust one — price response tells which.
Short answer
A trade sweep is an aggressive order (or burst) that fills through several price levels at once, visible as a fast run of prints across prices. A sweep cluster is several in a short window. If price continues in the sweep direction, the sweeps started a move; if it reverses, they likely exhausted resting liquidity and the aggressor. Check whether the book refills behind the sweep and whether liquidations coincided.
Possible price responses
| Price response | Reading |
|---|---|
| Continues | Initiative move |
| Reverses | Exhaustion of aggressor |
| Book refills quickly | Passive side strong |
| Coincides with liquidations | Forced sweep |
Measuring the response
Define a sweep (e.g. fills across at least 5 ticks within 200 ms), a cluster (3+ sweeps in 1 minute) and the response window. Record book state before and after.
Example
Illustrative: three sell sweeps in 40 seconds take price down 0.4%. Bids refill within seconds and price returns to the start within 10 minutes: exhaustion. Log the liquidation feed for the same window.
